An Exhibition by Harriott Brand and Alison Salter

‘The past is a foreign country – they do things differently there.’

(LP Hartley: The Go-Between)

IMG_5078Following visits to Boston’s Guildhall Alison and Harriott were inspired by the building’s architecture and  social history and also by the archaeological dig that had taken place in the market square in 2010. These visits led to a collaborative art project that has spanned 4 years of research, experimenting, and responding to the artefacts exhibited in the Guildhall building and to the town of Medieval Boston.

Each subject led from one to another, from past to present, and took them on a trail exploring trade, feasting, footwear, flora and fauna, landscape, medicine, astronomy, immigration and agriculture. They found themselves in a labyrinth contemplating medieval history and the connections of common themes and problems of today.

Bear_Wanted_550First shown in 2017 for 3 months at the Guildhall, Boston as Medieval~Made Modern, the exhibition transferred for 6 months to Gainsborough Old Hall.

2018 Amazing Menageries, also incorporated here, was a follow-on exhibition at Gainsborough Old Hall last year for 6 months. The works reflected on animals in medieval society in the form of banners and other loaned and commissioned artworks.

Re-titled There and Now – 800 years we are showing both exhibitions of works together at the Carre Gallery, Sleaford.

Exhibition open from 17 June until 29 June 2019.
