Year 13 Art and Photography Exhibition

St George’s had a successful grand opening of the Year 13 Art and Photography exhibition at the Carre Gallery; which gave the students an opportunity to showcase their work. Students, parents and teachers all attended to celebrate the work produced by their talented artists and photographers. Students have worked through adversity and challenges throughout their time in sixth form and the work produced is an absolute testament to their hard work and determination.

The exhibition is open for public viewing until Thursday 5th May. Please go along and check out the fantastic creativity of the students at St George’s Academy.

Street Scene

November 8, 2021

Carre Gallery with the support of Sleaford and District Civic Trust are proud to present the third Carre Gallery photography competition and exhibition.

Under the theme of ‘Street Scene’ we asked entrants to submit photographs of people, buildings or activities in Sleaford and the surrounding area.  We have an interesting mixture for our viewers to see  and we are sure you will see places and, perhaps, people that you will know – although possibly from a different perspective than you normally expect.

Three prizes will be awarded; The Expert’s Award judged by our chosen expert Paul Bilbrough, The Gallery Award chosen by the gallery trustees and The Civic Trust Award which will be chosen by visitors to the exhibition – so be sure to visit and make your choice.

This blog post will be updated with the winning choices as soon as our judges have done their bit.  The Civic Trust Award will be announced at the end of the exhibition to allow all visitors to cast their vote.

The exhibition is open 10:00 am – 4:00 pm every day from until 20 November (closed on Sunday).

As always, the gallery is free to enter.  Come and take a look  and choose your favourite. Click on any image to see a larger version (opens in new tab).

UPDATE :

Expert’s Award: Reflections by Michael Hardy

We have pleasure in announcing that Reflections by Michael Hardy has been given the ‘Expert’s Award’. Paul Bilbrough, our judge, was impressed by the technical ability used to create this image and said in his appraisal, “The image has very strong and harsh lighting from the car park… so full credit to the photographer for keeping control. The light balances well with the trees and stonework giving a nice warm feel. The shutter speed is spot-on blurring the water on the River Slea and allowing the reflections to work well in the water.”

Paul also identified six other images worthy of consideration and said, “These are all strong images and had this been a point-scored competition they would all have scored highly based on entries to the exhibition.

Sleaford and District Civic Trust Award

Reflections by Michael Hardy

Reflections by Michael Hardy (see image above) was chosen by popular vote of visitors to the exhibition.

Congratulations to our winners Michael Hardy, Edward Gilbert and Michael Hardy (again!) – each award earning a prize of £50 and a certificate.

On behalf of Carre Gallery and Sleaford and District Civic Trust, thank you to all participants for sharing their photographs and creating an interesting and varied exhibition of local places and events. We look forward to seeing your images in the next one.

With her latest exhibition ‘Flock’ we glimpse a collection inspired by movement and the natural world, bursting with exuberance. Her flamboyant pieces mark a time of new beginnings and opportunities, as well as a time for reflection.

Charity Fundraising Sale

October 19, 2021

We have a good selection of paintings, drawings, photography, prints and cards from some talented artists. Come along and find that elusive gift for the person who is hard to buy for, and help us to continue the gallery’s work promoting and supporting Lincolnshire artists.

Opening times – 10 am to 4 pm every day until Saturday 23 October.

Debbie is a self-taught Artist, of only a few years. She has always had an interest in art and it wasn’t until her retirement that she developed a passion for it and she now paints almost daily. She is on her last assignment for a Diploma with the London College of Art in Drawing and Painting and enjoys the mediums of Acrylic, Watercolour, Acrylic Inks and Pen and wash.

Debbie has had a number of her artworks published in art magazines over the last eighteen months. She has just recently finished a month solo art exhibition in Caistor and has a planned exhibition in early November at the Gallery at St Martins, Lincoln. She also has window displays in a framing shop in Lincoln.

She has some of her greeting cards and notelets at the gift Shop in Mrs Smith’s Cottage Museum in Navenby.

Debbie states, “As human beings we are all different in all aspects of life; hence the title of the exhibition. This is what makes every one of us unique and I like to feel that my paintings are somewhat eclectic and of a simple style – something for everyone.” Her style is always evolving to another level – so keep an eye out!

Debbie’s inspiration come from local surroundings, holidays, and a love of flowers in various gardens, parks and National Trust gardens too.

Richard V Thomas

For the last eight years Richard has been experimenting with collage. Creating images as diverse as British wildlife to characters from classic science-fiction and other icons of popular culture. The collages all begin life as drawings and then through cutting into the drawing they become a stencil, where layers of paper are glued together to create complex and intricate art works. The collages have many secrets which only closer scrutiny can unveil, whether a hidden image or phrase with subtle meaning, with the view that another look could find something new for the viewer to enjoy. The collages are also a form of recycling, making use of mass produced materials that we often throw away or leave in a forgotten draw such as magazines, greeting cards, Christmas cards, posters or wrapping paper.

Originally from South Wales and trained as an illustrator, Richard has lived and worked in Lincolnshire for the last twenty years. His life-long passion for drawing and painting has attracted him to subjects such as dramatic coastline and the personal stories found through portraits.

Richard has previously exhibited at the Carre Gallery. He has also exhibited in Lincoln a number of times in Gallery at St. Martin’s and the Sam Scorer Gallery and is a regular trader at the Lincoln Artists’ Market.

Anne Barnham

“I am an award-winning artist who teaches workshops and holds demonstrations for many art groups. Please enjoy these paintings, here are a couple to whet the appetite. I like the variety of views that catch my eye, some really call out to be painted. There are watercolours and oils, each medium suits different scenes.”

Martin Cameron

Photographer Martin Cameron is no stranger to Carre Gallery having staged solo exhibitions and in collaboration with other artists. He has been a regular contributor to mixed and themed shows at the gallery and has also exhibited locally at Sam Scorer and The Usher in Lincoln, The Hub in Sleaford, Stamford and Grantham. This is a retrospective of work taken mainly on location since Martin left the confines of his London studio.

“I have managed to squeeze fifteen images into the Candlesby room at the gallery. I decided to call it ’14 Locations and 1 Portrait’ (with apologies to David Hockney). I like to make my images as simple as possible, picking out detail in a scene as I survey it. I am particularly attracted to architecture and man-made objects. The ways that humans change their landscape to suit them is a constant fascination, sometimes creating beauty and very often not.”

“The portrait (not shown here) is of artist Baz East taken at the gallery when he exhibited there. It is one of my favourite shots.”

Exhibition open 10 am – 4 pm from Monday 20 September until Saturday 02 October.

Retro Work by Ian C Cox

September 6, 2021

Windham Hime Memorial Exhibition 2021

Ian has been a regular exhibitor at the Carre Gallery since it opened in 2009 as a solo exhibitor, joint exhibitor and contributor to many ‘mixed’ and ‘themed’ shows.

“I’ve had no formal training in art apart from school and the benefit of holidaying each year with an uncle who was an artist. I was allowed to run riot in his studio from the age of 5yrs and he taught me how to mix colours and look at things – “Look, observe, draw” was his advice; sound advice!”

“I was also fortunate that he would often take me out with him on his painting trips on the South Downs or along the River Arun near Arundel Castle.”

For the Windham Hime Memorial Exhibition this year Ian presents us with a retrospective. All pieces have been selected from work carried out between 2005 and 2020 and show a variety of media and subjects.

Exhibition runs from Monday 06 September until Saturday 18 September.

Open 10 am – 4 pm every day except Sunday.
