Paintings in Acrylic and Mixed Media

A Quick Glimpse by Jess Fuller

Jess Fuller describes herself as a “Lincolnshire Yellowbelly” – born, educated and still living in the county near to Grantham. After leaving college she studied drawing and painting with the Open College of the Arts before setting up her own studio in 2002.

Jess says, “Colour and form are important to my work and I like to experiment with different media, styles and subjects. I also love the big Lincolnshire skies, wide variety of landscape and nature. Much of my work is developed from photographs I have taken, which I like to manipulate and collage for different effects before sketching and putting brush to canvas. Many artists have influenced me including Kurt Jackson and the Cornish school, Edward Hopper, Georgia O’Keefe, Lucien Freud and Jackson Pollock.”

Cityville by Jess Fuller

After opening her studio as a member of Art on the Map, showing work in exhibitions with other artists, entering competitions, completing commissions and selling to corporate and private clients throughout the country, Jess successfully held her first solo exhibition in 2010.

Her website www.jessfullerart.co.uk has over 500 visitors each week from all around the world and she sells prints and cards through a US website.

“I hope you like what you see!”

.

The exhibition is open from Mon 04 July until Sat 09 July.  Jess will be in the gallery on Saturday 09 July between 2 pm and 5 pm to discuss her work and answer any questions.

Carre Gallery and Lincolnshire Pride – Summer Open Competition and Exhibition

It’s that time of year again. You are invited to submit work for the Carre Gallery Open Summer Exhibition which has become a much-anticipated fixture in the local Arts calendar.

The Summer Exhibition will run for three weeks from 18 July 2011.  There will be a preview evening on Monday 18 July between 6 pm and 8 pm; all artists submitting work are invited to attend.

Each artist may submit up to three 2D or small 3D artworks and, after selection, we look forward to an exhibition with broad appeal showcasing the wide-ranging talent that our county holds. Once again we have the support of Lincolnshire Pride Magazine who will be providing a feature article of the artist whose entry is judged Best in Show.  Carre Gallery will award £50 for another selected artwork.
The submission deadline is 02 July 2011 but to keep our admin workload to a minimum (we are all unpaid volunteers!) we ask you to complete and return the entry form as soon as possible.  Your artwork can be delivered closer to the deadline. Please see the entry form on the News Page.

An Exhibition of Paintings by Michael Webster

Mike Webster and Guests

Venice - Michael Webster

This year’s selected exhibitor is well-known artist Michael Webster.  Michael is a full-time artist who works and demonstrates in most media – oils, watercolours, acrylics, gouache, pen and wash, pastel, pencils etc. – his natural curiosity compels him to try different media and techniques and he masters them all.  Similarly his wide range of subject matter reflects his diverse interests – historical subjects, perspective, interiors and still life, architecture, and sketching and painting the English landscape.

He writes for practical painting magazines, exhibits widely and, with his relaxed manner and enthusiastic spirit, is a popular art club demonstrator giving entertaining and informative demonstrations.

As well as showing paintings inspired by the local landscape Michael is exhibiting images inspired from his trip to Venice earlier this year.

The exhibition is open 10 am – 4 pm from Mon 23 May until Sat 28 May.

Michael will be painting in the gallery on the Tuesday and Saturday and is happy to discuss his work with visitors.

Peggy Tacey Prize:

Visitors to Peggy Tacey’s recent exhibition of traditional Japanese embroidery (see below) will remember being given the opportunity to win a stunning example of her work, Californian Poppies.  Peggy kindly sold raffle tickets during her exhibition at the gallery with the draw taking place at the close of her show.

Peggy Tacey (left) presents 'Californian Poppies' to prize-winner Mrs Pauline Turnbull.

The lucky winner of the artwork was Mrs. Pauline Turnbull whose winning ticket was selected at random at the gallery.

We are lucky on two counts; Peggy’s outstanding work drew a large audience to the gallery and the raffle raised a significant sum for the gallery.  We are extremely grateful to Peggy for her generous gift.

Sculpture – Silk thread and gold thread on gold fabric. By Peggy Tacey

Nihon Shishu – Traditional Japanese Embroidery

This is no ordinary embroidery; it is a craft dating back centuries and requires a deep respect for the traditional techniques.  Students of Nuido (The Way of Embroidery) must demonstrate an increasing level of skill by producing set pieces of increasing complexity and are not allowed to attempt ‘higher’ works until they have completed ten stages of assessment.

Peggy is one such person who has attained this quality having traveled to Japan in the pursuit of her knowledge.  Her work was included in the prestigious third Japanese Embroidery World Exhibition held in Cambridge.

Camellias – silk thread on habatia fabric. By Peggy Tacey

Fine silk threads, often intertwined with real gold thread are painstakingly applied to carefully selected backgrounds; this craft insists on the finest quality textiles, threads and tools.  The resulting art has an almost mythical quality and seems to transport the viewer back to an ancient Japanese landscape of beauty and tranquility.
