Art on the Map – Taster Exhibition
April 13, 2014
A Showcase Exhibition presenting work by Art on the Map artists and craft-makers which aims to excite and encourage you to visit their studios and see more of their art during the Lincolnshire Open Studio event in May.
Lind Anso, Chairman of AOTM, says, “2013 was a good year for Art on the Map, the association of Lincolnshire artists and craft makers, whose members were pleased to open their studios to the public. We look forward to 2014 being an even better year. The main event, Open Studios Week, takes place from 3rd – 11th May this year.”
“Art on the Map is independent of any grants or subsidies. It exists to support the work of the creative arts at ground level, hands-on in the studio. The Open Studios week is previewed by this “taster” exhibition at Carre Gallery designed to whet the appetite of art lovers. We do hope people will take the opportunity to see what is on offer.”
.
6,000 free copies of the 64-page AOTM 2014 Directory will be distributed throughout Lincolnshire including libraries and art galleries. Copies are available at Carre Gallery. To see a digital version of the directory visit www.artonthemap.org.uk and click on the image of the 2014 brochure to check details of exhibiting artists.

Background information about Art on the Map
In 1999 artists and craft-makers of Lincolnshire combined to put their studios and workshops ‘on the map’. Little did they think that their vision would translate into the highly successful open studio scheme that we now have in the county.
Lincolnshire Open Studios, also known as “Art on the Map” (AOTM), provides opportunities for residents and tourists in the county to see close-up the products of many high quality Lincolnshire artists and craft-makers. It also gives visitors the opportunity to meet the members in their place of work and to view how it all comes together.

Explorations is a collection of paintings in mixed media ranging from traditional watercolours, coloured pencil drawings and semi-abstract paintings using acrylics, inks, and watercolour. Almost all of the images are inspired by the Lincolnshire landscape. Robin was born in Sleaford and has always been inspired by the surrounding countryside, the seasons, and the ever-changing skies.
“For me, as an artist, Lincolnshire is a truly inspiring place to live. Trying to capture that inspiration is a lifelong challenge and, through experimentation with various art materials and techniques, I try to capture the character of the Lincolnshire landscape.”
The title of the exhibition can describe the physical act of discovering the countryside and, more importantly, it reflects Robin’s belief that the way to learn about a particular medium is to explore. And that through this exploration we learn how the artists’ media truly work. That knowledge can then be used to depict the landscape and it’s ever changing atmospheres.
“Through exploration I am always learning something new about a medium. In a lot of my current work I use cling-film to create texture without the use of brushes. It gives another dimension to my landscapes.”
Explorations is held in the Bainton Room of the gallery and features framed paintings, original paintings in mounts, and hand painted cards.
The exhibition is open 10 am – 4 pm every day from Mon 24 March until Sat 29 March.

Mixed Approaches:
Traditional and Modern Paintings by Baz East
Baz East entered his first studio as a trainee in 1954 and spent much of his early career in commercial art followed by a number of years in scientific and technical illustration. Baz was extensively commissioned in freelance book illustration; the Warne’s series of Observer books alone contain over 500 of his illustrations. He worked for the Open University, Department of Graphic Design, from which he took early retirement from his position of Senior Graphic Artist in 1988 with the aim of painting full-time. Landscapes and outdoor themes predominate his work with oil and watercolours; oil being the main media of his choice.
Most of the work in this exhibition has never been exhibited before and, as well as his more traditional landscapes, it includes abstract work which Baz has been working on very recently.
Exhibition Opening:
Mon 03 Feb until Sat 15 Feb: 10 am – 4 pm (closed Sundays).

Martin Griffiths – First Light
December 2, 2013
The photographic images in this exhibition are a result of a two-year collaboration between light sculptor Martin Griffiths, formerly a landscape painter, and the artist/photographer Richard Devereux, who spent ten months recording Martin’s light sculpture installations as they toured Lincolnshire as part of the East Midlands Cultural Olympiad project ‘First Light’. Some of the photographs have been developed into digital images, so that they may appear closer to paintings than photographs. They are among images which will be included in Martin’s forthcoming book ‘First Light’, which brings together the disciplines of painting, sculpture, architecture and photography, and attempts to explain the centuries-old relationship between creativity and nature.
Illustrated Talk at Carre Gallery on Saturday 07 December
On 07 December at 4 pm Martin will be giving an illustrated talk on his work, which will explore the questions:
How and why do artworks affect us?
How can an artist develop their personal creative potential?
Can artworks improve our well-being?
This talk is for anyone who loves art, and wishes to gain more from their engagement with it.
The exhibition in the Candlesby Room at Carre Gallery is open from 10 am to 4 pm daily from Mon 01 December until Saturday 07 December 2013.
Peter Hayward
November 19, 2013
Peter Hayward returns to Carre Gallery with an exhibition of figurative paintings in oils, watercolours and gouache with the main emphasis being landscapes, for which he is well-known.
Peter was brought up in North Hertfordshire and went to art school at 16, firstly in St Albans and subsequently Luton and Goldsmiths College in London where he studied painting and stone carving.
He later moved to Lincolnshire in 1970 to become Head of Art at what was then the Sleaford County Secondary School and has remained in the county since.
“I have always drawn and painted, with a preference for landscape and direct observation. I try to depict atmospheric distance and seem increasingly to be trying to express a sense of serenity in my pictures.”
The exhibition is open Monday to Saturday, 10 am – 4 pm until 30 November.
Private view and artwork photographed by Neville Hull.
John Palmer – Pastel Painting Exhibition
November 4, 2013
John has been drawing and painting for as long as he can remember and is an entirely self-taught artist working in the realistic style. The exhibition has over fifty originals and many more prints available in a range of sizes and subjects including portraits, dancers, landscapes, animals, birds, still life, figures, botanical studies and pet and animal portraits.
“Having experimented with a range of art media I came to pastels around ten years ago and now work exclusively in pastels and pastel pencils using a range of manufactures as each brand has its own particular properties; some soft and easily blendable, some harder and more suited to detailed work.
Although I enjoy and appreciate most art forms, my earliest influences came from the Dutch masters and their ilk whose work still inspires me today. Art and culture have always been strong interests for me along with the natural world which is a passion also. My aim is to represent the subjects I paint in a realistic and recognisable way whilst using artistic licence to apply lots of colour, light and shade for dramatic effect and added interest.”
More information on John’s website: www.johnpalmerfineart.co.uk
The exhibition is open daily 10 am – 4 pm from 04 November until 16 November.
